Eighth-Gen BMW 3 Series Revealed: Neue Klasse Looks, Mild-Hybrid Power
BMW has finally taken the wraps off the eighth-generation 3 Series, internally known as the G50. The 3 Series has sold more than 18 million units since the E21 arrived in 1975, so any redesign matters. This one brings the Neue Klasse look to a petrol-powered sedan, and it will interest Indian buyers because this segment is a big part of BMW’s business here.

H2: Design: Familiar Proportions, Fresh Face
The G50 looks very different from the outgoing G20. Almost nothing carries over from the previous generation, and the sedan looks cut from the same cloth as the electric i3. That means slim lights, clean surfaces and a much simpler overall look.
The new car measures 4,765 mm in length, 1,850 mm in width and 1,455 mm in height, on a 2,860 mm wheelbase. It is longer and wider than the G20. The 318 and 320 get 18-inch alloys as standard, while the M350 gets 19-inch wheels. Nine metallic paint options are offered at launch, including Eucalyptus Green, M Le Castellet Blue and Fire Red.
Most press images show the M Sport package. A base model will look calmer.
Interior and Technology
Inside, the cabin is a clean-sheet redesign. The 3 Series gets BMW Panoramic iDrive on BMW Operating System X, with a 17.9-inch central display, the Panoramic Vision display and an optional 3D Head-Up Display. The Intelligent Personal Assistant handles voice control and can make proactive suggestions.
Expect fewer physical buttons and more screen-based control. Some buyers will like that, and others will miss the old iDrive knob. We will judge the ergonomics only after a proper drive.
Engines and Performance
Only some details are out so far. The petrol range uses BMW TwinPower Turbo engines with 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance.
The top model is the M350 xDrive, which is reported at 437 hp (443 PS). It is a straight-six with all-wheel drive. A full M3 is expected later, but BMW has not released final details.
What is still unclear:
- Diesel: BMW has shared nothing about diesel versions. The current India-spec car is petrol-only, so this matters less here.
- Plug-in hybrid: BMW has confirmed a plug-in hybrid will join the range over the coming year.
- Touring: a wagon version (G51) is part of the family, but details are limited.
The Electric i3 Sits Alongside
The eighth-gen family is not petrol-only. The electric i3 is the first fully electric 3 Series, offered as the i3 40 xDrive and i3 50 xDrive with up to 566 miles of WLTP range. Range figures on WLTP are usually higher than real-world results, so treat that number as a best case. BMW says recycled content is 25% in the petrol car and 31% in the i3.

What It Means for India
BMW India has not announced a launch date. Based on the global timeline, an Indian debut is unlikely before 2027. The current 3 Series has done well in long-wheelbase form here, and BMW has already shown a long-wheelbase i3 for China, so a long-wheelbase G50 for India is plausible. This is our expectation and not an official plan.
Pricing is also unknown. Expect it to sit above the current 3 Series Gran Limousine, given the bigger size and new technology. We will update this page when BMW India confirms details.

The G50 keeps what made the 3 Series popular: rear-drive-biased dynamics, a straight-six at the top and a familiar sedan shape. It adds a modern cabin and a sharper look. The big question is whether the screen-heavy interior and mild-hybrid engines keep the sporty feel. For Indian buyers, the wait for local details is the main drawback.
